Surfing the bayous of...Ohio

Surf? Ohio? Well, yes.

If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. If geography gives you Lake Erie and the Hocking River and the Olentangy River and so on...surf them anyway.

While not all Ohioans are lunatics, the guy who surfed Lake Erie yesterday was (although notice the wicked cool dry suit he's wearing...makes him look like a Roswell alien).

There's somebody every year. Well, lots of somebodies.

There is a Lake Erie Surf web site (and no, I did not write it).

When I was an undergraduate at Ohio University, there was a skate shop (in Cincinnati, I think) called Surf Ohio. It may have gotten the whole thing started (since the idea of surfing and Ohio do not automatically go together in a sentence)...

So, in the 1970s, there was a semi-drunken Spring bash on the banks of the mighty (*snort*) Hocking River...and one on the banks of the equally mighty (har, har) Olentangy River near OSU.

I was invited to the OU one several times, but declined...because I didn't know how to surf.

There are days when I am just so blonde.

Some of us sane people have refused to try surfing Lake Erie, having seen how powerful and destructive one of the Great Lakes can be in a violent storm. Besides, the best surfing is in winter.

Somehow, combining drowning with freezing just ain't my thrill.

Yeah, but did Mike?

Nah. He would have written "Surf Illinois." :-)
